There is an online community called Geek and Sundry. On their page, there is a web series called Tabletop, which is hosted/co created by Wil Wheaton. In it, he teaches/plays a variety of Tabletop board games, and it's spawned something amazing.
It now has a tumblr, which is called seenontabletop. This tumblr page is full of stories related to gaming and the web series. I posted my story to this tumblr, and out of a lot of posts on the site, mine was reblogged by Wil Wheaton himself. I'm honored, for real. Wow..just....wow.
You can still see it on the top of his blog, but I'll post it here for those of you who don't want to go on tumblr and get trapped there forever. (For real, it will happen)
My dad has always been the gaming influence in our family. I think the first time I really played a tabletop game was when I was about 8 or 9 and my dad started teaching my sister, brother, and me how to play D&D. My sister was much more interested in drawing her characters than playing, but my brother and I kept playing and wound up joining in for a two year campaign with some other friends of ours a few years after that first D&D game. After the conclusion of “Flaming Chaos”, the three of us and my dad continued playing our own games, one shot games run by Dad, and games run by friends of ours that he helped get interested in D&D/tabletop games.
A few years ago, my Dad had a heart attack and was given a very low chance of recovering. There was quite a while in the hospital where we thought he wasn’t going to pull through and things were very scary. Now, two years later, he’s doing well and things couldn’t be better.
A few weeks ago, my sister and I bought Munchkin after I found it close to a “As seen on Tabletop” display (which I flailed joyfully over). Since buying that game, we’ve been going crazy over it. The first night we had it, my brother, sister, my dad, and I played it three times back to back and had a great time. Before the game, we all watched the Tabletop episode and realized we didn’t have a game board, so Dad built a 3D dungeon with 10 rooms and we all picked a miniature. When I went home for the night, I found out they had played a few more games for the next week or so, and Dad excitedly told me all about it.
Last saturday, we all got together and had a cookout/ Doctor Who viewing party. After the Doctor Who tears, my friends brought over Munchkin:Zombies and we played a 4 hour game with a huge deck, a modified 12-room game board, and seven people. It was definitely one of the best times I’ve had, gaming wise, and it was so good to see some old friends and sit down and game again.
Thanks for everything you’re doing, seriously. You’ve brought so many people together and just made me realize all over again how great it is to have a dad who games. <3
I'm just so happy right now. Thank you for reading my story, and thank you for doing this for all the gamers out there.
I am Dad, and I approve this message.
